Last night, I read a marvelous m/m book called Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale. I had vaguely heard about it before and so had it on my Amazon to-buy list for a while. A Christmas gift certificate allowed me to treat myself. Very glad I did. The story is set in an AU world that feels like Dicken's London in which Prodigals, an underclass of beings descended from demons, co-exist uneasily with humans. The Prodigals are often hauled off to the Inquisition where they are tortured for various offenses, including manifesting aspects of their nature. The first part of the book is from the point of view of a Prodigal named Belimai Sykes(what a great name), who has undergone "correction" in one of these facilities, resulting in psychological damage and an addiction to an opium-like substance. He makes his living turning tricks and doing odd jobs. Belimai has a rare gift even among Prodigals. He can fly. The description of his flight through the smoggy city is positively lyrical.

Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] morethmusing !   I hope you have a great day.

Since you are a catapult aficionado, I thought I'd dredge up an oldie but goodie.  I don't remember who first did the gifs for this priceless sequence, but the original is no longer where I bookmarked it and I could only find it in fragments on youtube.
(I just adore this) Enjoy!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sian265   here is a link to some news about PJ's Hobbit movies.

The scuttlebutt is that Ian McKellan will return to play Gandalf (we knew that) and Hugo Weaving will reprise Elrond.  Cate Blanchett may return as Galadriel.  Apparently that's it for the returnees.  So no Orli playing a cameo Legolas.   Also, apparently they have no Bilbo picked out and are casting a wide net for all the characters.   The first script is completed, still working on the second.   The first movie probably won't be in theatres until 2012.  Hey wait, isn't that the year the earth is supposed to end?  Noooooo.

Well, I received a Middle-earth fanfiction awards notice and apparently

Elegy for Númenor received First Place in Genres: Longer Works: Incomplete
and
Ossë's Gift received Third Place in Genres: Adventure: Elvish Lands

Wow! I really didn't think I'd get anything at all. Thank you very kindly to my reviewers (and you know who you are) who wrote glowing and often lengthy reviews for the three fics nominated. I know how much work a good review entails.
I'm quite touched. (But you knew that already.) I guess this means I should continue writing Elegy?

I saw Avatar this evening, in 3D, and it is truly a visual feast that I can enthusiastically recommend with some caveats . . . Beware! Spoilers follow. Read more... )

Btw, I just found this review that I agree with completely, so if I'd just posted the link last night, I could have saved myself some writing time.  lol.

Avatar. The previews look awesome and even if I can pretty much guess the story from the trailer, it's one that needs to be told yet again as witness some of the xenophobic comments under some of the youtube trailer clips. Such as this one by some mouth-breather: "if those freaking aliens win, then f**k this movie." I like the premise and would see it just for the incredible CGI effects.

Happy birthday to [personal profile] just_ann_now     Sorry to be a bit late.  Hope you had a wonderful day.  In honor of our mutual interest in Swordspoint, I'm giving you a youtube vid I found that has a Truly Effective Sword Fighting Technique (plus some hot guys).   Enjoy!  *g*
Addendum:  I found out this is from a movie called Romantic Assassin.  Here is a longer clip with subtitles.  Even funnier, imho. And what the heck are those guys doing buried up to their necks?  LOL.  Gotta find this movie.

Snarfed from several. I confess I rejected the first couple I got but this one made me laugh.

Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Cosby Show and Mr. Ed.
The story should use hypnosis as a plot device!

In the category of weird shit elfscribe digs up, this is really cool, a dance like a human kaleidoscope.

I saw this article on Yahoo news about the newly discovered Staffordshire Hoard.  A recent discovery of an incredible Anglo-Saxon treasure which archaeologists are saying is more significant than the Sutton Hoo find!  My archaeologist's soul does a snoopy dance.   What I find so amazing about this is the idea that still in this day and age when one would think everything that could be found has been . . . and then we discover there is still more to discover.  Fabulous.
Here's a website with shiny pics.

Hello dear f-list,

Does anyone have any experience with print-on-demand publishing companies?   I'm gathering data for a project and We're looking at some possibilities, particularly with Lightning Source, Outskirts Press, or Aventine.

Thanks!

Could anyone enlighten me on the pros and cons of the My Guests feature that allows me to track who visits the LJ but that also tracks my movements through LJ cyberspace?

I just saw this article on the AP about a lawsuit settlement that will now enable The Hobbit to go forward.  Gad, I wasn't aware there still was a lawsuit.  I'd thought it was between New Line and Peter Jackson. Is that another issue?  I fail to understand how if there was a contract between the Tolkien estate and New Line for a percentage of profits, that the Tolkien estate was forced to sue to get that contract honored? Is it because it was an earlier agreement with another studio and therefore ambiguous as to whether or not it applied to New Line?
Sheesh.  I guess the good news is we can expect the Hobbit movie sometime in the next few years.

Happy bday!
