We Will Be Who We Are by Lotrfan. The Army of Valinor has come to Beleriand. Maedhros and Maglor feel they must join in this battle against Morgoth but are reluctant to bring Elrond and Elros into the conflict. War of Wrath prompt focusing on the relationships between the surviving sons of Fëanor and the sons of Eärendil they are fostering. (Short Story)

There was battle in the air by Lyra. "But Eärendil came, shining with white flame, and about Vingilot were gathered all the great birds of heaven and Thorondor was their captain, and there was battle in the air all the day and through a dark night of doubt. Before the rising of the sun Eärendil slew Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky; and he fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were broken in his ruin." I think most of those interested are aware already, but here's some (mostly slightly older) news.

I'd been thinking for some time it might be good to post a list of "Quenya names", that is, not any names linguistically Quenya, of which there are quite a number in the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion, too, but the Quenya versions of characters' names drawn from HoME that fic writers use for Valinorean settings or to describe interactions among the Noldor.

So, triggered by a review by a floundering reader, I feverishly spent a couple of hours compiling a preliminary list, which is posted here. I'm hoping that, with other people's help, it can be eventually turned into something reliable and then posted to the References section on SWG, like Clotho's chronological compilation (which I use quite a lot).

Also, my bio of Dorlas has been posted in this month's SWG newsletter. Dorlas is that not-very-nice guy in the last section of the Tale of Turin and Tolkien put quite a lot of thought into developing his role, although this is more obvious from the "Children of Hurin" or "Unfinished Tales" than from the "Silmarillion": about the nature of courage, Edain politics, dramatic irony, and so on.

The SWG Ancestors challenge has concluded. There are ten stories, some of which I haven't managed to catch up with yet.
I wrote a short piece that features Aragorn as well as some of the more usual suspects.
This is now also cross-posted to AO3:

The Witnesses (266 words) by Himring
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien, TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Aragorn | Estel, Celeborn (Tolkien), Elrond Peredhel, Galadriel | Artanis, Glorfindel (Tolkien)
Additional Tags: Ancestors, Doriath, Gondolin, Nargothrond, Cross-cultural, Edain, Elves
Summary: Aragorn is told about his ancestors by those who saw them with their own eyes.

The next SWG challenge is called Behind the Scenes and is not so much about stuff going on immediately behind the scenes, but things going on somewhere else entirely but exactly at the same time as larger events.

And the Silmarillion40 has been continuing, now considerably past the half-way mark, with excellent contributions, both artwork and fic, although I still need to catch up with some of the fic.

Behind the Scenes SWG challenge October 15 through November 10

The Silmarillion is full of pivotal moments, of events where the characters we love and loathe literally and figuratively shaped the world of Arda. This month's challenge asks you to take one of those moments, one of those big events or turning points in the story, to think about where and what happened … and then create a fanwork about what was happening at that moment in time, anywhere but at the site of the action.

"Behind the Scenes" asks you to write, draw, or create a fanwork that shows what a character who was not involved in the major event was doing at the time it was taking place. The character may be canon or original. For example, what was Fëanor doing on the day that Lúthien was born? What was going on with the Elves of Ossiriand as the Battle of Sudden Flame began? As Númenor sank beneath the waves, what did Elrond's day look like? The event may impact your character later on in time, but in the moment when your story takes place, your character(s) has no idea what is happening.

Fanworks for the "Behind the Scenes" challenge must be posted to the archive (or DW or LJ for fanworks other than writing and podfic/audio) by November 10 in order to be eligible for this month's creator stamp. Late fanworks for all of our challenges are always welcome (but do not receive stamps); reviewer stamps never expire (but let me know, please, if you need a reviewer stamp for a challenge that is more than two months old).

Full challenge guidelines (and past challenges) can be found on the site here.

Our last challenge closed two days ago (and our next challenge will be announced tomorrow!) and we had ten stories written. If you haven't read them already, check them out and please let the author know if you like what you read! As always, links go to the Table of Contents where you can view more information about the story.

Housekeeping Stuff: A.k.a, an update on stamps ... I am dreadfully behind, as is abundant to anyone who wrote for or commented on our last challenge, "Song of Exile," and still has not received your stamps. I can only offer reassurance at this point that I am almost out of the weeds in which my life has been entangled since the end of August. (In addition to the Silmarillion40, the start of the school year and having to take two classes to keep my teaching license has left me with just enough spare time to preserve shreds of my sanity. Seriously, if this schedule went on for even one more month, I don't know if I'd even have that.) It is tops of my list to get stamp collections caught up as soon as I can, hopefully within the next two weeks (my last class ends in a week and a half). I can only offer apologies in the meantime and thank everyone yet again for your patience with me.

Dear Yuletide Author

Oct. 6th, 2017 11:40 pm
heartofoshun: (poinsettia mexico)
[personal profile] heartofoshun
If you choose to write one of my requested fandoms, we’re probably already on the same page, or nearly so. Write what makes you happy and have a great time. My only request is that, if you do not know me, do not assume that I know all the little in-jokes and nod-nod-wink-winks that you and your closest friends share within these rare fandoms. You are actually supposed to be writing for me—the casual reader—this is Yuletide—not your usual clique partners. So, if I do not get your jokes or hints, it’s no fun for me at all. Otherwise, I tend to be open to all interpretations and/or ships. Have no NTPs and have an imagination.

Do-Not-Want - dark fic, horror, or torture. Reminder: and kink is very particular/personal, so don’t go there, unless you think you know what I would like.

Fandom: The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison
- Hard not to please me in this fandom. Love the denizens of the court that Maia and Cesvet are creating. I like the idea of Maia/Csevet and also Csethiro/Vedero, among various possibilities. Am not wedded to anything. Do like the idea of setting the action in a young court, with the new blood, winds of change, and the fresh air that Maia brings.

Fandom: Swordspoint Series - Ellen Kushne
r - prefer setting in Swordspoint or between Swordspoint and Privilege of the Sword. Alec Campion, Richard St Vier, Diane Tremontaine. I should have nominated characters so I could have asked for The Fall of the Kings!

Fandom: British Romantic Writers RPF - I said above “no dark fic” but these drama-mongers did what they could to make their own troubles and create their own dark, just because they could! Not saying you can’t write sad or difficult, but step back and try, if possible, not to take their antics as seriously as they are purported to. Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, John Keats. Love them all. Particularly like the antics of that group of characters during that infamous summer-not-summer near Lake Geneva. Keats doesn't fit, but if he's even mentioned by any of them that would great, if not don't twist yourself into a pretzel trying to include him.

Fandom: Call Me by Your Name - André Aciman
Oliver (Call Me by Your Name), Elio (Call Me by Your Name)
Don’t be afraid to make it romantic, nostalgic, or permeated by the gorgeous lushness of the original setting. I love the story for its coming-of-age/first love/true love(!) sensibility; not really looking for a cynical read (and it does not invite one IMO). Please no ranting about the age difference! It's not an issue for me, the characters, or the author. And I really hope I don't get a story that implies it is. Oliver and Elio are both babies!

Fandom: Richard II – Shakespeare
Richard II (Richard II), Duke of Aumerle (Richard II), Henry IV | Henry Bolingbroke (Richard II)
One can do so many different things with this play. It’s has everything that makes for great stories--five times over. But, keep in mind that I did not sign up for a particular performance or actor! I do love the Hollow Crown version. But write what you like. Note that I have not seen the play with David Tennant--so if you are inspired by that don't assume I will understand your references--spell them out. I don't want to be scratching my head trying to follow.

Fandom: 14th Century CE RPF
Richard II of England (14th Century CE RPF)
This kitchen-sink category did not include the characters I was hoping could be used with Richard II. So use the history books and/or do whatever you want. There is enough drama, color, machinations, betrayals, rumors, theories, and scandals in that era to support almost any POV or any kind of story. But I do hope to see Richard II near its center.

Thank you so much for offering to write a story in one of my chosen fandoms. I picked these rare fandoms because I would, in general, read almost anything that appears in them. So, think of it as kicking in an open door. (If I sound cranky, it is because I had a headache. If you don't believe that I am not fussy, read some of my reviews online. I am not fussy!)
